OUR LITURGY Introduction In today’s liturgy we are reminded that we all suffer in body, mind, and spirit and need healing. We hear the Gospels of the ten lepers and how only one, a Samaritan, returned to give thanks. Do we express our gratitude? 1st Reading 2 Kings 5:14-17 In curing the foreigner, Naaman, by the hand of his prophet, God showed that his compassion extends beyond the ranks of his Chosen People. Naaman, responds to the cure with both gratitude and faith. Psalm Response The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power. 2nd Reading 2 Timothy 2:8-13 We continue the brief sequence of St. Paul’s second letter to Timothy. Paul tries to encourage Timothy in spite of his own hardships, even being chained like a criminal. Paul quotes an early Christian hymn as proof of the faithfulness of God. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, Alleluia! For all things give thanks to God, because this is what he expects of you in Christ Jesus. Alleluia! Gospel Reading 17:11-19 St. Luke’s parable of the ten lepers, is set in the context of the obstacles facing those who will follow Jesus. This is dramatically illustrated by the fact that only a Samaritan, none of the Jews, came back to acknowledge his praise of the God who had saved him. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FORMATION OF CHILDREN AT MASS Sunday 9.30 am (NOT DURING SCHOOL HOLIDAYS) The Young Families Chapel is available for parents/carers with their pre-school children and Liturgy of the Word for Children is provided for school aged children every Sunday during school term 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time (C) We might be shocked at the seeming ingratitude of the lepers who failed to thank Jesus for their healing, but should we be? Do we always feel grateful and express our thanks, or do we often take the kindness of others for granted. If we think about it we might come to realize that we are more likely to thank a stranger for an occasional kindness than we are to thank members of our own families for their daily service and kindness to us. St. Paul, in 2 Thessalonians 5:18 says that we should give thanks in all circumstances, but this would be impossible unless we recognize God’s presence and action in our lives. We can then believe, even if we don’t understand, that even the bad things that happen to us have a purpose. The Jesus in the gospel story seem not to recognize God as the author of their healing. Maybe they saw Jesus as one of the itinerant healers who frequented the countryside, and they were more concerned with seeing the priest to obtain permission to renew their normal lives. The Jews were anxious to return to the ritual of temple worship. Is there a message here for us? Could it be that we can become caught up in the routine of Sunday worship and fail to remember that the word ‘Eucharist’ has the meaning of thanksgiving. Do we stand mute, or raise our voices in joyful praise the way the Samaritan did? Hymns for 9.30 am Mass Entrance - Sing a New song. No. 80 Psalm Response - All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God. Gospel Acclamation - Celtic Alleluia Procession of Gifts - O Christ the Healer O Christ, the healer, we have come to pray for health, to plead for friends. How can we fail to be restored, when reached by love that never ends? >From ev’ry ailment flesh endures Our bodies clamour to be freed; Yet in our hearts we would confess that wholeness is our deepest need. In conflicts that destroy our health we diagnose the world’s disease; our common life declares our ills: is there no cure, O Christ, for these? Grant that we all, made one in faith, in your community may find the wholeness that, enriching us, shall reach the whole of humankind. Communion - I am the Bread of Life. No 49 Thanksgiving : The Prayer of St. Francis Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring your love. Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord; and where there’s doubt, true faith in you. Make me a channel of your peace. Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope. Where there is darkness only light, and where there’s sadness, ever joy. Oh, Master grant that I may never seek, so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood, as to understand, to be loved, as to love with all my soul. Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving of ourselves that we receive, and in dying that we’re born to eternal life. Recessional A New Heart for a new world.
